2021 Spring Everyday Jewelry Collection!

Hi everyone! We are back from our business vacation and we are excited to announce that our New Spring Collection has arrived. For this spring we would like to introduce COLORS! It feels like our 2020 was such a dark and uncertain year for all of us. We are still going through this crazy difficult time together, but I really wanted to add some vibrant colors to cheer us up! Life sometimes throws challenges at us but we can't forget to appreciate some simple things like arts and colors...Without them our life really becomes dark. This new collection is all about Kimono and enamel jewelry. Kimono(着物) is literally translated into "Things to wear" and is a traditional Japanese garment. Kimono has a very long history and it is definitely one of the most important symbolisms of Japanese culture.

New studio location!

Hello!

Hello! MIMIDALE DESIGNS studio is now located on beautiful Vancouver island. Vancouver island is in the Pacific northwest, and in the Canadian province of British Columbia. This move was truly special, and we feel pretty lucky to be surrounded by this beautiful West Coast nature. Here is an inspirational quote that pretty much sums up why we moved...

“If your world doesn’t allow you to dream, move to one where you can.”

-Billy Idol

Have a great day everyone :)

Mizuhiki (水引)

Mizuhiki (水引)

Mizuhiki is a type of an ancient Japanese art which uses special cords for decorative knots for gift /envelop wrapping. The tradition is said to have originated in the early 7th century when Ono no Imoko, who was an official envoy to China, returned from a mission bringing gifts wrapped with hemp strings dyed red and white.Thereafter, tying gifts with red and white cord became a fad, spreading mostly among court nobles. Mizuhiki is made from long thin strips of washi paper( Japanese paper) tightly twisted into thin "koyori" strings. It was not until after World War Ⅱ that the general public began to incorporate mizuhiki cords. Currently there are several forms of mizuhiki and they all have different meanings and are used in different occasions. Some mizuhiki knots are hard to untangle, which therefore are widely used in occasions such as weddings as the newly married couples are expected to have a long lasting life together. Other mizuhiki knots are easy to untangle which are used for occasions such as baby gift wrapping as people are happy to hear the new arrival of a baby and they want the couple to have more babies in the future.
Rather than expressing one's feelings directly through words, the Japanese discreetly wrap mizuhiki cords around their gifts for the recipient to sense their intentions.

Asa (麻)

Asa (麻)

Asa (麻) is translated to hemp, and it is native to Japan. Because of its durability and fast growing nature, Asa was one of the main crops in Japan until about 1945. In Japanese culture this Asa pattern was thought to spell out negative energy and thus used as a talisman. It is easy to believe why many Kimono worn by children had this Asa pattern; because there was limited food supply and scarce medical knowledge many children did not survive their infant years. The Japanese hoped for healthy growth for their children by printing the Asa pattern on their Kimono. Today the Asa pattern and fabric is still widely used for Japanese art and summer clothing.
